Welcome to Holy Cross Lutheran Church

What to Expect

Entering the Church

When you first enter the church, you will be greeted by an usher who will provide you with a printed bulletin that will guide you through the service. While worshipping in the sanctuary, masks are optional.

Worship services can be intimidating for newcomers. While we try to make worship as accessible as possible for everyone, we know that some aspects can be confusing. Feel free to ask an usher or someone near you for help if you have any questions.  We are happy to help and want all voices to be included in praise to God.

Children are always welcome at Holy Cross! During worship, we celebrate God’s children of all ages. There are children’s bulletins and children’s worship bags available in our Narthex for children to use during worship, If your smaller disciples are getting more rambunctious than you would like during worship, we have two options a small play area in the Narthex where you can also hear the broadcasted service, or our *Childcare Nursery ministry. The Nursery Attendant using comes after the Children’s Sermon to invite anyone who wants to come with her. If you would like to utilize the Nursery at some other time during the service, you can ask an Usher or Greeter for directions.

*We are currently looking to hire an attendant(s) for our nursery. Applicants must be nurturing, caring and patient caregivers, and enjoy working with children. Applicants must be CPR certified. Pay is part-time hourly during Sunday morning services and/or Wednesday evenings during ELL classes from 6:45 pm to 8:45 pm. Contact the church office with interest.

The Service

Our worship style at Holy Cross is traditional. Music is led by organ or piano. The pastor wears traditional vestments (clergy robes) in the service.

A full liturgy is used to focus our praise and prayers to God.  The printed bulletin you receive when entering includes notes in the margins of the bulletin to explain why we use the various liturgical elements.

Throughout the year we emphasize each liturgical season differently to mark the passage of time.  Liturgical texts change to reflect aspects of that season, some elements are removed or added to reflect the mood of that season, and colors used to decorate the chancel are changed to provide visual reminders of the current season.

Communion

Communion is celebrated every Sunday at Holy Cross.  The table (altar) is not our table, but Christ’s table. Just as Christ welcomes all, all are welcome to receive communion at Holy Cross.  Pastor will give instructions on how we celebrate communion at that part of the service.  Written instructions are also included in the bulletin. In-home visits for communion are also available. To schedule an in-home visit, please contact the church office at (703) 437-1883.

Fellowship After Service

Please join us in the Fellowship Hall (located directly across the entrance to the sanctuary) for coffee, tea, juice, or water, and good food (there is always fruit!). It's a terrific way to meet up with Holy Cross members and visitors!

How should I dress?

We encourage everyone to be comfortable and to wear what they want to worship.  You’ll see a variety from suits and dresses to jeans and t-shirts, even shorts and flip flops in the summer.
